the pink and gold of morning

this ever-escaping now
barefoot
in the courtyard
water from a spigot
the day lily’s first spring bloom
this is the now of life-long longing
this co-cola
this cigarette
this listening to grasshoppers
i walk bringing water
to trees planted hands knees
watched at a few paces by the
elderly sandhill crane couple
who recognize me but hesitate
to bend again delicately
at the seed feeders
it is this work of years
of my hands
my bit of land

to wish
when i refuse to cry with
more than silence
now
to wish
and reply with
the witness of my eyes with
I and I with
ever under the sky
and whose wish, my wish when
through the air i hear
broken, elderly women
at treatment
who just want to go home
through the air i hear
the flying lives who sing
above our ears
and the prayers green lives
beg the sky with
which wish, which longing
shall we ask the crow
to tell us thy will with
some light which
rises cannot deny this day
and so shall we list our lives which
bumped that time which
causes pause
whose wish, whose breath sighs with
these desiderate
as noon rises in our now
and once again
because we think of our time with
osiris
and a device which
desires touch, has no longings
and which longing when it is long i long for
I and I
beyond the die with
a color
in a distant time.

Su Zi is 2023 Zoeglossia Fellow, the curator of May’s POTW, a Poet-writer, artist, and equestrian.
